Dollhouses are a tool for understanding the world around us – we create our own reality by daydreaming, we can redecorate anytime we like. It becomes a little world which we can control, and therefore, our own microcosm.
The video “Welcome to my Dreamhouse. I also have a pink slide.“ introduces the viewer to a pink and perfect-looking house, inspired by the classic Polly Pocket toy. The inhabitant attempts to convince the audience of her perfect home through the use of repetition, alongside the artificially happy voice, while changing wallpapers show how this staged dreamhouse is constructed. This inner monologue underlines an exaggerated wish for escapism, and thereby clearly criticizing the closed-off and paralyzed state that a comfort bubble can create.
The project addresses themes of growing up, the desire to hide in an increasingly complicated world and the privilege to do so.
