Our cities, increasingly governed by technology and convenience, hold a limited amount of space for play and spontaneous human connection. Many urban objects prescribe a confined range of uses, even ones designed for human interaction. The Re:Bench explores how public seating can become more open-ended, inviting people to engage with it beyond its intended function.
Inspired by adaptations of city-space objects and playground elements, the project reimagines the bench as a reinterpretable structure that encourages curiosity, movement, rest, and encounter. Through its playful form and multiple affordances, it invites users to question, explore, and creatively redefine how it can be used.
Not quite a bench and not quite a playground, the Re:Bench becomes a place for gathering, leisure, and interaction in the urban environment.
