As technology became ubiquitous in our lives, researchers hoped for a world of technology that grounded us. Technology that empowered the periphery of our attention, letting us be more attuned to the world. Looking at the products sold under the marketing umbrella “Internet of Things”, it’s clear this did not shake out. However, a technology exists whose constraints specifically help cultivate this sense of calm: e-ink displays. The project explores what happens when you build an interface for such a display, specifically to enhance a sense of “locatedness”, starting by questioning the conventions of type for interfaces.
