Wizura

Keywords: Extraction, Mining, Heritage

Mining is not a one-off event of the past but a temporally extended process that can be negotiated and re-evaluated in the present. The video work Wizura navigates from sites of extraction to spaces of conservation. Together with accompanying interviews with an archeologist, geologist and conservationist it explores the underground of a post-mining ecosystem from an underwater perspective. By following the material witnesses and the contamination of the land body of a highly acidic lake in western Poland, the narrative weaves together different time scales and contexts related to the notion of heritage. A ‘free floating’ body activates the sensing of hydro-geophysical shifts and mineral extraction of the past.
