GRADUATION PROJECT
I take you along on a personal exploration of the dike-ring on the Hoeksche Waard, which I walked over the course of 6 days. This nearly 70 km long dike protects the island from high water. This dike-ring is not the only dike on the island. The island has been gradually embanked over time, resulting in a total of 270 km of dikes. I moved to the Hoeksche Waard with my family when I was 6. The sheer amount of dikes on the island has made me very aware of the danger water can pose. During my research, I found out that the history of the dikes is very important to the people on the island. The thing that stood out most to me is that the solid-looking mass in the landscape is actually a very changeable element that together with the suroundings tell stories of the past. I used these stories to speculate about the future.
