GRADUATION PROJECT

Edonia is type family based on an exploration with the pointed nib, searching for ways to change the rhythm in a typeface specifically designed for editorial purposes. It is a search for shapes and an attempt to approach calligraphy from a different point of view. The project started off with a calligraphic exploration, looking for ways to break the verticality of the strokes by applying changes in the direction of the stroke. This experimentation with the nib results in a project that examines the relations between shapes. It navigates the translation and relation of round shapes and diagonal cuts by looking at different ways that they can relate and work together in a system.

For this purpose, each style of the family is taken as a chance to embrace a trait of its personality, from exploring the limits and links between expansion and translation coming together. It blurs the lines between these two distinct contrast types in the Regular text style, through the Bold text style that focuses on verticality, establishing more prominent cuts with the dispersion of the weight, and passing through the Text Italic which embraces the family’s calligraphic roots by setting the focus on the expansion origin of the family. Its visual extreme is explored in the design of the compressed display. Edonia is a dynamic and different family for the publishing world.
