Fieldnotes From Higher Ground

Art enthusiast, environmental activist, nature appreciator, animal lover, textile experimenter and everything in between. My goal is to connect people. Connect them to nature, themselves, each other and their (build) environment.

GRADUATION PROJECT

I take you along on a personal exploration of the dike-ring on the Hoeksche Waard, which I walked over the course of 6 days. This nearly 70 km long dike protects the island from high water. This dike-ring is not the only dike on the island. The island has been gradually embanked over time, resulting in a total of 270 km of dikes. I moved to the Hoeksche Waard with my family when I was 6. The sheer amount of dikes on the island has made me very aware of the danger water can pose. During my research, I found out that the history of the dikes is very important to the people on the island. The thing that stood out most to me is that the solid-looking mass in the landscape is actually a very changeable element that together with the suroundings tell stories of the past. I used these stories to speculate about the future.
