Ruggero Magrì is an italian type designer and lettering artist.
After studying graphic design and art direction in Milan, he discovered the world of letters and it was love at first sight. From brushes to vectors, from visual identities to typographic posters: any potential application attracted Ruggero and pushed him to explore new expressive possibilities.
During his young career, he worked as a type designer in Turin at AlfaType Foundry and in Paris at Typofonderie.
In 2019 he received the Sota Catalyst Award. A price that recognizes young people who have created original work in type design, type history, or other areas related to typography.
GRADUATION PROJECT
Gesto is a type family that explores the expressiveness of a specific tool — the brush — while questioning the classic constructions of uppercase and lowercase.
During the early stages of the research, two sources had a strong influence on the development of the project. On one side, there was the horizontal emphasis of Eurostile: a typeface designed by Aldo Novarese in 1962, which has a strong character while remaining a workhorse design. On the other, there were the strength, the energy and the rhythm of Arrighi’s and Tagliente’s calligraphic pieces; features that have always fascinated Ruggero.
Gesto has been designed enhancing this strong dualism and finding different balances and solutions depending on its aim.
