This video-installation questions the contemporary need for guidance related to one’s emotional life in the West. Oomes explores expressions of this social need and where it could possibly lead. He presents a situation in which this cultural search ends up in a highly commercial, yet widespread branch of the self-help industry. As often seen in public spaces, a reserved space in which people can draw back and learn about their emotions. His work dedicates such a space to a visualisation technique called a Mind Movie. By highlighting the popularity of such techniques, Oomes tries to discuss a spiritual grey area in the West and reveals a form of spirituality that can evoke both scepticism and romanticism toward the term itself.
